SRSG Nicholas Kay Message on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
Mogadishu, 25 November 2015 Violence against women and girls is pervasive in Somalia, making Somalia one of the worst places to be a woman. The continuation of rape and harmful practices, such as polygamy, early and forced marriages, female genital mutilation, wife inheritance, continues to undermine efforts towards increased gender equality. As long as violence against women and girls persists, peace and development cannot be sustained.
