Secretary-General's message to Meeting of the AU Peace & Security Council on Terrorism in Africa

Nairobi, 2 September 2014 - I would like to express my appreciation to His Excellency Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno, the Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, for convening this Summit Meeting.  I would also like to reiterate my solidarity with the Government and people of Kenya as they continue to experience horrendous terrorist attacks, including at the Westgate Mall last year.  As I stressed during my visit to Nairobi in June, the United Nations stands ready to provide counter-terrorism capacity building assistance to the Kenyan Government.

International partners welcome reconciliation progress in Kismayo

Mogadishu, 31 August 2014 – The United Nations, Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and European Union (EU) welcomed the agreement by Col Barre Adan Shire (Barre Hiiraale) to participate in a reconciliation process and for his irregular military forces to present themselves for screening and potential integration into the Somali National Army (SNA) with the support of the Federal Government of Somalia.

UNSOM-Civil Society Forum meets in Garoowe
On 26 August, the monthly UNSOM-Civil Society Forum was organized in Garoowe, Puntland, with the Human Rights Section taking the lead. After UNSOM Human Rights Officers explained the role and responsibilities of the Office of the Human Rights Defender (OHRD), numerous participants appreciated UNSOM's efforts and welcomed the soon to be established Office. The Forum also made a number of recommendations, including to the Parliament to select the most knowledgeable and committed person, and requested UNSOM to provide training and capacity building as needed.

While in Mogadishu, the Council met with members of the Federal Government of Somalia, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and Somalia's government.
