Violence against women and girls is pervasive in Somalia, making Somalia one of the worst places to be a woman. The continuation of rape and harmful practices, such as polygamy, early and forced marriages, female genital mutilation, wife inheritance, continues to undermine efforts towards increased gender equality. As long as violence against women and girls persists, peace and development cannot be sustained.

– The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, today expressed his deep concern about the arbitrary arrest and detention on 19 November in Garowe of Mr. Jama Deperani, a correspondent for the privately owned Somali Channel TV.
