Development | UN-Habitat provides training on inclusive local governance

In partnership with The Hague Academy of Local Governance, UN-Habitat provided a training-of-trainers session on inclusive local governance to15 participants drawn from across Somalia. 

The 15 participants were selected from a group of 26 who went through the first overall training last year. They hailed from Puntland, South West State, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Jubaland and Benadir, and included staff from the Federal Ministry of Public Works.

The areas covered in the training included land administration, legal frameworks, land dispute resolution mechanisms and the different forms of land based-revenue that exist in their respective regions. 

UN-Habitat said the aim of the training was to support the understanding and significance of land governance while promoting sustainable development and policy administration.

Youth |  UNSOS supports Somalia Careeer Fair 

Spearheaded by UNSOS, the UN family in Somalia recently hosted a career fair attended by more than 200 Somali students and members of civil society.

The first day of the two-day fair took place at the UN Compound in Mogadishu; the event aimed to raise awareness about job opportunities and career pathways within the UN system.

“This is a good step towards capacity-building, opening doors and helping you to understand how you can navigate the system to access job opportunities within the UN to serve Somalia, and beyond,” the Head of UNSOS, Assistant Secretary-General Aisa K. Kacyira, said in her remarks at the opening of the fair.

In addition to hearing from senior UN officials and human resources staff, the event’s attendees were able to engage with representatives from a dozen UN entities in Somalia to explore career options.

Political | UN Special Representative meets Galmudug and Hirshabelle leaders

As part of her regular engagement with the leaders of Somalia’s Federal Member States (FMS), UN Special Representative Catriona Laing met separately with Hirshabelle's President Ali Gudlawe Hussein, and Galmudug's President Ahmed Abdi Karie ‘Qoorqoor.’

In the first encounter, they discussed Somalia's constitutional review process, the engagement of the National Consultative Council, the fight against Al-Shabaab, stabilization efforts and Hirshabelle's reconciliation process.

In the second encounter, they discussed Somalia's constitutional review process and the building of UN premises in the Federal Member State’s capital, Dhusamareb. Ms. Laing also congratulated the FMS leader on Galmudug’s law that bans all forms of female genital mutilation.
