Mogadishu – Marking both Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations today reaffirmed its unwavering support to Somalia in the full realization of the Declaration.
"The principles and values of the Universal Declaration are as relevant today as they were when the document was first drafted. Human Rights Day is an opportunity to celebrate Somalia’s achievements when it comes to their promotion and protection,” said the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing.
"Somalia is at a crucial stage of development focused on achieving its vision of an inclusive peaceful and stable Somalia based firmly on human rights."
Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the Universal Declaration is a milestone document which enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Human Rights Day was established to mark this historic occasion.
