The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) was established on 3 June 2013. Its mandate ended on 31 October 2024, subsumed to the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).

UN Special Representative Congratulates Somalia on 54th Independence Day

Mogadishu – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay, congratulated the people of Somalia as they celebrated their 54th Independence Day and called on all Somalis to unite and continue the hard work to build a peaceful future for their country. “On this day, 54 years ago, the people of Somalia took charge of their own destiny and realised their aspiration for an independent sovereign nation, committed to the ideals of unity, equality and justice. The hard work of building a peaceful and prosperous nation continues today. As we celebrate independence day, we not only remember the historic achievement of 1960, but we also look towards the future and pledge to support a peaceful and stable future for all Somali people.” Mr Kay said.
