Closure of UNSOM

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) was established on 3 June 2013. Its mandate ended on 31 October 2024, subsumed to the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).

Statement Attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Kenya

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the horrific attack on civilian workers in Mandera today, which reportedly killed at least thirty-six people. He expresses his deep condolences to the families of the deceased and to the people and the Government of Kenya. The Secretary-General hopes that those responsible will be brought swiftly to justice. He reaffirms the full support of the United Nations to Kenya's efforts to fight terrorism and to provide security to the population consistent with international law and Kenya's human rights obligations.
