The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) was established on 3 June 2013. Its mandate ended on 31 October 2024, subsumed to the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).

UN SRSG welcomes Federal Parliament’s endorsement of 9 nominees for NIEC commissioners

Mogadishu – The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, welcomes the endorsement by the Federal Parliament, earlier this afternoon, of the nine nominees for commissioners of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC).“The appointment of the National Independent Electoral Commission is a critical milestone in attaining the peace and state-building goals set-out in the Somali Compact,” said SRSG Kay. “The Federal Parliament has played an important role in establishing the NIEC as required by the Provisional Federal Constitution. We look forward to the prompt establishment and capacitation of the NIEC, including through the setting-up of its Secretariat."

The United Nations stands ready to work with the Federal Government of Somalia to enable the NIEC to start its work immediately."
