UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General condemns terrorist attacks in Mogadishu

Mogadishu - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, condemns the terrorist suicide attack which occurred earlier today in Mogadishu in the vicinity of the airport.

This is one of several sporadic attacks carried out by extremists since the beginning of Ramadan.

According to reports, the blast which was targeting an AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) convoy killed civilians and injured others.

"Unfortunately, such acts of terrorism continue to cause extreme suffering to the civilian population," said SRSG Kay.

"This heartless attack, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, is another indicator that the extremists have resorted in desperation to instilling fear. The Somali people have rejected their violence and opted for peace and progress" SRSG Kay noted.

He further expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
