Galmudug and Puntland have completed the electoral process for the House of the People, bringing the number of federal states that have concluded the exercise to five.

A ceremony was held today in the Puntland capital of Garowe to commemorate International Human Rights Day and mark the end of the annual 16-day campaign against gender-based violence.

HirShabelle became the third state to conclude the electoral process as another 13 candidates were elected to the House of the People in the state capitals of Jowhar, Cadaado and Mogadishu.

Civil society groups, Members of Parliament and youth in Somalia today joined the rest of the world in observing the International Human Rights Day through art, speeches and a panel discussion at the Jazeera hotel in Mogadishu.

The business community in Somalia is reaping a windfall of profits from the ongoing electoral process with hotels booked to capacity, printing companies flooded with orders and travel agencies barely coping with the soaring demand for air tickets and vehicles.
Abdirisak Omar Ahmed, a law student of SIMAD University, said, "My desire is to see the restoration of the rule of law and that is what is happening now. The extension of the Electoral College to other regions other than Mogadishu is good for the stability of the country. I am pleased with the electoral process. Thirty-two-year-old Ibrahim Dahir Hussein was one of the Somali youth who had lost hope in the country’s politics.
He was tired of hearing old politicians repeat that youth are the future leaders, yet no action was being taken to include young people in the affairs of the country.
