The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) closed its operations on 31 October 2024, and was succeeded by the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) as of Friday, 1 November, in line with the UN Security Council’s resolution 2753.
The change reflects the progress in the country and is also in line with the request of the Federal Government of Somalia for a two-year transition of UNSOM’s functions to the United Nations Country Team by October 2026.

They held open, cordial, and frank discussions while committing to strengthen the relationship between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the United Nations (UN).

I arrived in Somalia on 3 October and have been well received by prominent officials of the Federal Government and of the regional states.
I have been impressed with the Federal Government’s far-reaching reform agenda and their commitment to practical implementation through roadmaps for delivery in each relevant sector. Somalia has maintained a positive trajectory but continuing political turbulence could throw it off course.

Mogadishu – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Somalia, Nicholas Haysom, condemned in the strongest possible terms today’s indirect fire attack on the main United Nations compound in the Somali capital.
Seven mortars landed inside the compound this afternoon, injuring two UN staff members and one contractor. None of the injuries is life-threatening.
