The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) closed its operations on 31 October 2024, and was succeeded by the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) as of Friday, 1 November, in line with the UN Security Council’s resolution 2753.
The change reflects the progress in the country and is also in line with the request of the Federal Government of Somalia for a two-year transition of UNSOM’s functions to the United Nations Country Team by October 2026.

05 May 2014 - New York – The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms yesterday’s terrorist attack in Mogadishu, Somalia, for which Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility and has caused numerous deaths and injuries. The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. The members of the Security Council wished a swift recovery to those injured.
03 May 2014 - Mogadishu – Swift action in 2014 in federalism, including passing key laws and completion of the constitutional review in 2015 in combination with continuous progress on the security front can still lead Somalia to successful elections in 2016, said the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay, while meeting with representatives of women’s groups today in Mogadishu.

23 Apr 2014 - Mogadishu – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay, condemned the killing of Mr. Abdiaziz Isaaq Mursal, a Member of the country’s Federal Parliament. Mr. Mursal was shot dead earlier today in Mogadishu by unknown gunmen.

Following the attack the Federal Government called for a full investigation and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
