  • 20 Apr 2023 - Mogadishu – The United Nations family in Somalia extends warm greetings and congratulations to all Somalis on the occasion of Eid-al-Fitr. “As we come to the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the United Nations wishes a peaceful and safe Eid-al-Fitr to the people of Somalia as they celebrate this special period of togetherness,” said the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Somalia, Anita Kiki Gbeho.
  • 12 Apr 2023 - Ladies and gentlemen of the press,  I wish to thank President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the people of Somalia for their warm welcome. I am happy to be back here during the Holy Month of Ramadan.   This continues my annual tradition of Ramadan solidarity visits, which dates back to my time as High Commissioner for Refugees.

  • 08 Mar 2023 - Mogadishu – On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the United Nations in Somalia today congratulated Somali women for their continued contributions to their country’s development.
  • 14 Feb 2023 - International partners* strongly condemn the continued violence in Laascaanood and express serious concern about reports regarding the mobilisation of armed groups. We are also deeply concerned about the shelling of civilian infrastructure, which has resulted in casualties and widespread displacement. Attacks against civilians must stop immediately.
  • 07 Feb 2023 - Mogadishu – International partners* are gravely concerned about the current violence in Laascaanood that has resulted in civilian casualties, including children. We call for an immediate de-escalation of violence, the protection of civilians, unimpeded humanitarian access and for tensions to be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
  • 20 Jan 2023 - Mogadishu –  International partners* welcome efforts by Somalia’s leaders to advance priorities on peacebuilding and state-building, including through the regular meetings of the National Consultative Council. In particular, we welcome the renewed focus on the constitutional review process, federal resource-and power-sharing, and reconciliation, all of which are crucial to ensuring Somalia’s long-term stability.

Preventing violence and ensuring the protection of civilians is paramount. We call for calm and restraint. Tensions must be resolved through de-escalation and dialogue.
