The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) closed its operations on 31 October 2024, and was succeeded by the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) as of Friday, 1 November, in line with the UN Security Council’s resolution 2753.
The change reflects the progress in the country and is also in line with the request of the Federal Government of Somalia for a two-year transition of UNSOM’s functions to the United Nations Country Team by October 2026.

29 Jun 2020 - Mogadishu – On a visit to Somalia’s National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) today, the United Nations envoy to the country commended Somalia’s advances in diagnostic testing for COVID-19, and highlighted the importance of the national laboratory and other laboratories throughout the country in the COVID-19 response.

19 Jun 2020 - Mogadishu – On the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the United Nations envoy to Somalia today called on Somalia’s leaders, communities and partners to do more to assist and listen to victims and survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). He called for all people to stand in solidarity with those who have endured these acts, and to act decisively to eradicate CRSV in Somalia.
