Jubbaland state completes voting for Lower House seats

 
Jubbaland became the first federal member state in Somalia to complete voting for seats in the House of the People today.

 

Balloting for the last of 43 seats allocated to Jubbaland resulted in the election of Ibrahim Mohamed Hussein from the Darod-Bartire clan. He received 47 out of a possible 51 votes, and as a future member of parliament (MP) Mr. Hussein promised to support programmes for women’s empowerment in his state.

 

Ten women candidates were elected to the House of the People from Jubbaland during the course of voting that began on 8 November in the state.

 

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, Michael Keating, the Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira, the Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Somalia Veronique Lorenzo, and Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam ‘Madobe’ witnessed the final round of voting in the state capital Kismaayo.
