Message from the Secretary-General to all UN Staff in Somalia

“I would like to extend my profound sympathy and solidarity with you and your families as we mourn the terrible loss of life caused by the attacks in Mogadishu on Saturday. I could only imagine the shock and trauma you have experienced.  I wish to reassure all of you that I place your safety as the highest priority and I have asked some of my senior managers at Headquarters and in the field to spare no efforts to offer any appropriate support in this difficult moment.

I would also like to share my grief with the family of Ms. Faiza Mohamed Sheikh Mohamud, who tragically lost her life in the attack. For the past six years, Faiza has been a pillar of the UNDP Somalia Country Office. In her various positions, including most recently as Special Assistant to the Country Director, Faiza served the United Nations and the people of Somalia with the utmost professionalism and compassion. She leaves four children behind.

The attacks on Saturday were of an unprecedented scale. Your response to this monstrous crime has been incredibly moving. I commend all UN colleagues for helping with the Federal Government’s emergency response and medical assistance, including with a blood-drive in the UN camp. I have been humbled by the level of mobilization and solidarity shown by the people of Mogadishu and the international community in the aftermath of the attacks.  Away from the spotlight, and often away from your loved ones, you continue your tireless work for peace even in the face of the most difficult circumstances.

With my sincere appreciation and personal regards.”

Antonio Guterres
