UN Envoy to Somalia condemns assassination of Somali journalist

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, condemned yesterday’s assassination of the Somali journalist Hinda Haji Mohamed, who worked for the government-run Radio Mogadishu and Somali National Television stations. Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the murder in a statement.

“I condemn the assassination of Hinda Haji Mohamed in the strongest terms possible,” SRSG Kay said. “I call on the authorities to investigate thoroughly and make every effort to bring the killers to justice swiftly.”

Ms. Mohamed became the ninth journalist to be killed in Somalia since April 2014.

SRSG Kay extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of Ms. Mohamed, whose late husband Liban Ali Nur was also a journalist and died in a suicide bombing of a Mogadishu restaurant in 2012.
